Professional Tax is a state-level tax levied on income earned by professionals, salaried employees, and businesses in India. In states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, West Bengal, Gujarat, etc., it is mandatory to register for Professional Tax.

There are two types of Professional Tax registrations under the respective State Professional Tax Acts:


PTEC – Professional Tax Enrolment Certificate

  • Applicable to individuals and entities (professionals, proprietors, firms, companies, LLPs, etc.).

  • Covers self-employed persons and business owners who are liable to pay Professional Tax on their own income.

  • Even if a company has no employees, it still needs PTEC registration for its directors/owners.


PTRC – Professional Tax Registration Certificate

  • Applicable to employers who are required to deduct Professional Tax from salaries of employees.

  • Employers must collect and deposit Professional Tax on behalf of their employees to the state government.

  • Mandatory if the employer has employees whose salaries exceed the minimum taxable limit under the respective state law.
